EliasKyriakides

On October 28th, 2019 our dear colleague and friend Elias Kyriakides passed away peacefully, with his wife Stella by his side, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

He is remembered by many people, all over the world, as a distinctive individual; first and foremost an exceptional human being, kind and giving, a spiritual person of integrity and uncompromising values; a talented teacher and great mentor to his numerous students and researchers; a supportive and stimulating colleague; a beautiful mind and an exceptional researcher; and, above all, a friend.

Elias’ passing leaves a great void. We have opened an online book of remembrance and condolences, where we warmly invite colleagues, students and friends from all over the world to share their tributes, emotions and memories: https://www.remembr.com/en/memoriam.elias-kyriakides-1975-2019

Elias was a brilliant scientist and a leading expert in the areas of electric power systems and critical infrastructure systems with an emphasis on wide area monitoring and control, power system operations, and the integration of renewable energy sources. He was a member of the faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department since 2004 and a co-founder of the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence.

His path to academic excellence was clearly evident from his student years, where he graduated summa cum laude in all his BSc, MSc and PhD studies in Electrical Engineering (GPA 4.0/4.0 in all degrees), winning the Cyprus Presidential Award for ranking 1st among all Higher Technical Institute graduates in 1996, the Alumni Associate Award for ranking 1st among all Spring 2000 BSc graduates at the Illinois Institute of Technology, USA, and the Palais Outstanding Doctoral Student Award for the best doctoral graduate of the year in 2003 at the Arizona State University, USA.

From 2004 until his passing, he was with the ECE Department at the University of Cyprus where he worked tirelessly towards the success of the newly established department, leading teaching and research activities in the area of Power and Renewable Systems, as well as many administrative and outreach activities for the department. Elias was also co-founder of the KIOS Research Center at the University of Cyprus. He was a key contributor in the Center’s activities up until the last days, acting as a driving force and contributing towards the Center’s elevation in 2017 to a European Research and Innovation Center of Excellence, through a highly competitive EU Teaming Project which was the first one ever to be awarded in Cyprus. Elias also coordinated the COST Action IntelliCIS: Intelligent Monitoring, Control and Security of Critical Infrastructure Systems between 2009 and 2013, which was the first COST Action to be coordinated in Cyprus.

His research contributions are immense, given the short 16-year span of his academic career, and have been recognized and awarded multiple times at an international level. He was considered one of the rising stars in his international academic community. He published more than 200 articles in top-ranked journals and conferences in the area of Power Engineering and Renewables and secured 30 competitive research projects with a total budget of more than 5 million Euro for his share of activities.

Elias was also an extraordinary teacher and mentor to his students, who will remember forever his kindness, generosity and gentle spirit. He has supervised 17 PhD students, 22 MSc and 18 MEng students, more than 60 BSc students, and advised more than 12 post-doctoral fellows. He will be remembered with love and his legacy will carry on through the excellent work of his students and the support of his colleagues and collaborators.

His contributions were countless and will remain influential with the passage of time. Elias will continue to inspire the many people who had the privilege to work and collaborate with him.

In the near future the KIOS Center of Excellence will celebrate and honor Elias in a dedicated event which will take place in Cyprus. We will invite those who have worked with him over the past 20 years to join us and contribute.

Please do not hesitate to share this message widely.

His colleagues, students and friends at the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence.
