The KIOS CoE in collaboration with the Cyprus Civil Defence Force successfully conducted a four-day training activity on the use of drones in emergency response, between the 10th and the 13th of September 2019 at the University of Cyprus.

Forty-five experts from 16 EU member states and Israel participated in this training activity, which was supported by the “Expert Exchange Programme” of the European Union's Civil Protection Mechanism. Among the participants were representatives of first response authorities in Cyprus, such as fire fighters, civil protection officers, emergency management instructors and police officers.

During the four-day training activity, the participants had the opportunity to undertake a series of training lectures regarding drone theory and drone technologies for emergency response, the fundamental principles that govern drone operations, as well as Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for drone deployment. Moreover, the attendees participated in a small-scale search and rescue exercise in the Landa area (Ayia Napa), where automated functionalities were used, and the participants had the opportunity to train on the process of collecting and managing data obtained from the drones. The scenario concerned locating missing people at sea and on shore.

The purpose of the training activity was to provide attendees the necessary knowledge, tools and skills to make effective use of drones in various emergency response operations. Furthermore, it was a good opportunity to test the state-of-the-art software tools developed by the KIOS CoE, such as automated flight mapping and live streaming, that can be utilized by Civil Defence organizations in resolving operational problems.

This is the second consecutive year that the KIOS CoE organizes this training activity with the aim to raise the national and international visibility of the Center, to promote the technologies developed in this domain by the Center, and to contribute to the Center’s goal of delivering practical technological solutions that have a real impact to the world.
